James GibbonsMy name is James Gibbons and I am a Teacher of Geography and Humanities at St. Joseph’s RC High School in Newport. The school has embarked on a journey of utilising iPad on a 1:1 basis, allowing learners to either bring their own device or to purchase an iPad through an Apple Education Solution Expert. I am passionate about the purposeful use of devices in the classroom to improve and enhance learning and am constantly looking at and trialling new ideas and ways to make this happen.

My journey started in 2013 when I first joined our schools Digital Learning PLC. This group was a testbed for new ideas and led on projects with learners and whole school training on the power of mobile technology. Furthermore, I have also assisted in coordinating parental engagement evening and frequently engage with the wider education community either by presenting at events or by welcoming visitors from other institutions into my classroom to see 1:1 technology in action. As well as my role within the classroom, as part of our schools’ Learning Innovator project, in 2014 I led on a project developing a team of student Digital Leaders. This team of student leaders aims to assist the integration of mobile technology and shape the way teachers and learners use their iPad effectively in the classroom. Currently, our students are developing whole school policies based on device usage, creating screencasts or books as app tutorials and presenting at visits by educators who have come to view our learning with iPad journey.

In March 2015, I was fortunate enough to be selected to join the Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE) Class of 2015. The ADE Program began in 1994, when Apple recognized K-12 and higher education pioneers who are using a variety of Apple products to transform teaching and learning in powerful ways. Today it has grown into a worldwide community of over 2,000 visionary educators and innovative leaders who are doing amazing things with Apple technology in and out of the classroom. Learn more about this group of innovative educators here. I have also recently been selected as a Book Creator Ambassador and Showbie Champion.

This blog is where I will be posting about my experiences: sharing my progress on an #EdTech journey, reviewing a variety of apps and sharing tried and tested methods for using technology to enhance teaching and learning in an effective and meaningful way.
